Working towards Sustainable Energy for All

Richendra Van Leeuwen's picture

According to the International Energy Agency’s 2011 World Energy Outlook report, more than 1.3 billion people living in developing countries still don’t have basic access to electricity, and rely on expensive, poor quality solutions such as kerosene based lights in their homes. These provide low light levels and are detrimental to their health due to fire risks as well as causing respiratory illnesses.  A further billion people whose homes are on the grid have only intermittent access to electricity.

The expansion of global markets over the past 200 years has brought enormous benefits to millions if not billions of consumers across the world, whilst unchecked business growth has contributed to new global challenges.  As a result going forward responsible market based solutions are the key to successful global development. Within this context inclusive business development should address how to bring the nearly one and half billion people in the world without access to energy further into global markets.

Christmas is traditionally a time to thank people for their support for your organisation over the year and a Christmas card is the ideal way to do this. But for any company concerned about their carbon footprint, cards are not the most sustainable option.

Renewable World's picture

Did you know that Thursday 13th of October is the ‘International Day for Natural Disasters’? The day is organised every year by the UN with the aim of raising awareness about disasters and what we can do to reduce our risk.

The theme of this year’s day is about how children and young people can be partners in disaster risk reduction plans and activities. The number of people affected by weather related disasters is due to rise from 250 million a year to 375 million a year by 2015 and children are likely to be disproportionately affected.
