The final round-up

Melanie Matthews's picture

Well, its the last day of EWEA2012, and its been action-packed, and a great way to end the conference. We made the most of the last chance to get a few more pledges - and were pleased to get one from GWEC, the Global Wind Energy Council - the Global trade association working to create a better political environment for wind energy. Thanks GWEC!

Variety packed

The one thing you can definitely be sure of at a conference like this is that no two days will ever be the same.  Today's "menu" included staff induction, disappearing donations, brainstorming new ideas, and of course lots more lovely visitors to our stand!

Sunrise runners

So today started at an early hour - meeting a group of enthusiastic runners at Nyhavn harbour as the sun came up. This mornings Business Run (combining exercise and networking)  organised by the lovely Anders and Katrin from Flensborg & Asssociates was an inspiring and fun event.

Wonderful, windpowered Copenhagen

Copenhagen plans to become the world's first CO2 neutral capital by 2025, and it's already got pretty green credentials with its electric buses and free bikes, the world's most climate-friendly hotel, and even carbon-neutral beer.  But today it notched up another great green landmark as it played host to the world's first ever event to be certified WindMade.

Renewable World Christmas E-Cards Now Available

Melanie Matthews's picture

After the sucess of last year's Christmas card appeal, Renewable World is once again offering companies the opportunity to send a bespoke, stylish e-card as a seasonal thank you to their clients and stakeholders in return for a donation.

Christmas is traditionally a time to thank people for their support for your organisation over the year and a Christmas card is the ideal way to do this. But for any company concerned about their carbon footprint, cards are not the most sustainable option.

Send a Renewable World seasonal e-card and help us give the gift of light this Christmas

Jordanie, world champions and a dramatic journey

True to form for this trip so far, this has been another day to remember! Our last day in Monkey point involved an exciting football match, and a VERY scary boat ride!

But before I tell you about those - I had more time to interview Carla yesterday and she definitely made it clear how the simple addition of this solar fridge, lighting and nebuliser will make a huge difference to the lives of the Monkey Point Community.

Energy for health at Monkey point

A day of mixed feelings – excitement at heading off to the “edge of the world” to meet the community at Monkey Point; a little bit of fear when I saw the size of the boat we had to travel on to get to Monkey Point (small) and the size of the waves outside the bay (large!); and finally being a little overcome by emotion when Carla, the nurse at Monkey Point told me that Renewable World had made her dreams come true.

Learning about communities on the edge of the world

Today we left Managua to go to Bluefields, and meet our partner there, blueEnergy.  It was only a short ride by plane, but the Caribbean coast is almost like another country.  You can’t get there by road – the road stops at a place called Rama, and you’d have to take a river boat from there.  Once you are on the coast the main way of getting between communities is either walking, or by boat.

So Betsy from Rivas was finally crowned Carnival Queen and the party finished at around 1am.  Then the staff had to clear up, and then this morning at about 6.30 guys started taking down the scaffolding of the stage.  So I wasn't at my best this morning. Betsy might get by without her beauty sleep but I need all I can get!

Woke up early (body clock doesn't know what time it is!) so I took the chance to have a quick swim before breakfast and then caught up with emails and started writing a trust funding application. What did we do before laptops and wireless?! Its great to be able to keep in touch with the office and do my job from half a world away.
